It has always been said that the relationship between max verstappen and his father, Jos, was very cold. But in recent times things have gotten worse and there has been talk of the difficult childhood that the Formula 1 driver went through, even mentioning “abuses”. Now José has taken it upon himself to deny it.
Verstappen has released a documentary on his life and in it you can see his father’s treatment. But Jos stresses that these behaviors were in no way “abuse”: “There are people who say that I am a bad father because I abused my son, I never abused him!”
In statements to the Swedish media ‘Expresen’, Jos acknowledges that it was “hard”: “I raised him, I was hard on him. That was my plan all along.” A plan to make him a “real competitor.”
“Very close family members were involved in the project. Normally I’m not a guy who really likes to talk about these things, but I think knowing it gives you a little more information about how everyone lived through that period,” he explains.
That “plan” that Verstappen father talks about is turn your son into a Formula 1 super champion. And she has achieved it. Already twice and looking for the third. Max’s character is a winner and he has shown it in recent times.
He does not like to lose. And that is something that she shares with her father. In Saudi Arabia, when Checo Perez took the win, Max was very clear with his message to Red Bull: “I’m not here to be second”. Jos turned his father into a winner…and insists he didn’t go through “abuses.”
