Lewis Hamilton has given the surprise in Hungary. The Mercedes have flown under the radar all weekend and it seemed that Max Verstappen was going to take pole position comfortably again, until at the last moment of Q3, the seven-time world champion beat the Dutchman by just three thousandths second in one of the tightest standings in history.
Not even Hamilton himself expected to achieve the best time, even less considering that his teammate, George Russell, he had been knocked out in Q1.
But a perfect lap earned Hamilton a pole position 33 grands prix later. “It’s been a crazy year and a half. I have lost my voice from yelling so much in the car“, the Mercedes driver told the official Formula 1 media after qualifying.
“That feeling is amazing. I feel very grateful to be here because the team has worked very hard. We have been pushing very hard all this time to finally get pole position. It feels like the first time“Hamilton said.
The Briton did not start from the first position since the controversial 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, in which he ended up winning touching Verstappen. “It has been a great challenge for all the members of the team. There’s been ups and downs, one big roller coaster. But none of us have lost faith. We have all come together, we are concentrating on trying to steer the car in the right direction,” he said.
Despite having 103 victories to his credit, the ’44’ has been seen visibly excited at the possibility of winning again. “Oh jesus. I have to try to sleep tonight. And yes I think tomorrow we will give everything we canwe will give our best as a team”, said Lewis Hamilton to conclude.
