If Caterham is known for anything worldwide, it is for its small and extreme sports. Lightness has always been their greatest premise and, therefore, they maintain that classic configuration and analogue aftertaste that almost no other current vehicle has. However, the British firm is also aware that times change and that they have to adopt new technologies in order not to be left behind. For this they have presented their Caterham Project V.
It is a prototype with the potential to reach production. In fact, they claim that it could be ready for a commercialization end of 2025 or beginning of 2026. Although we must admit that it is something very different from what Caterham has accustomed us to. It’s about a All-electric coupe SUV that maintains its sports vocation in a fairly compact size. Despite the increase in weight that the incorporation of batteries implies, not to mention the ceiling that other models like the Seven do not have.
They keep it in about not negligible 1,190 kg thanks to a chassis composed of carbon fiber and aluminum. On the other hand, the propulsion system of this prototype is formed by a 272 hp rear electric motor of power. It is a propulsion model that is equipped with a 55kWh USOC lithium-ion battery pack that allows it to have a autonomy of 400 kilometers and fast charges of up to 150 kW in direct current. In addition, it is quite fast, since it does 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and has a top of 230 km/h.
For the design they have had the Italdesign collaboration, which has contributed to making that coupé silhouette so recognizable and attractive. That low front end is striking, making it clear that it is not necessary to put an engine under the hood, in addition to some sculpted wheel arches to accommodate 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels. By the way, in the Project V configuration you can note a double wishbone front and rear suspension with fully adjustable geometry.
And a capital singularity of the cabin, which probably will not reach production, is its 2+1 configuration. It has two front seats and a rear one between them, although it could also be configured as a 2+2 with a somewhat tight space. It gives flexibility to the user, who inside will also have a complete and driver-focused multimedia system. The truth is that it is quite realistic to be a prototype, so much so that they dare to put a price on the production version. could come by less than 80,000 pounds to UK.
