Despite having moved away from the podium in the last two races (Austria and England)Fernando Alonso looks with perspective his first months in Aston Martin. He signed for a team from the back of the grid and now they walk together in third position in the constructors’ championship.
The development of the green car has been spectacular. And it is hard for the Asturian to believe what he is experiencing: “It is still hard for us to believe that we are fighting with Mercedes and Ferrari, knowing that we are in that battle…”.
In statements collected by ‘Motorsport’, he recalls what it was like the first time he drove the single-seater: “When in Abu Dhabi I tested the Aston Martin and I felt it was a good and competitive car.”
“I think the performance of the Aston Martin and the Alpine in the last race of last year was very similar. So, when I got into that car, it felt good, I think they made a lot of progress during the year,” says the two-time Formula 1 champion. 1.
“When we started the season in Bahrain, we definitely didn’t expect to be there and now we’re enjoying every weekend and it’s good to be in this battle,” said the Aston Martin driver.
Alonso’s numbers are spectacular. The best for him in a decade. He walks third in the world championship (behind Max Verstappen and Checo Pérez) and accumulates six podiums in ten races.
