BMW updates its iDrive operating system with a new version 8.5 that improves usability for the user.

The BMW Group had already announced the arrival of the new generation of the operating system for its cars, dubbed iDrive 9, in the future BMW X1. However, the Bavarian brand has revealed that the current software of its vehicles, iDrive 8 is getting an updategoing to a more modern version 8.5.

This update, which will be integrated into its already standard “Curved Display”, is based on a new home screen with something that BMW calls QuickSelect function.

The German car manufacturer aims to offer a new layerless interface showing all relevant functions and information on a single level. This will reduce the additional function of entering a submenu. Thus, there will be live widgets on the driver’s side and it will also use icons that can be selected with a swipe of the finger.

This new graphical interface will also have more interactive features, such as BMW’s familiar gesture control and configurable displays instead of a fixed navigation screen. The BMW Intelligent personal assistant will also be accessible with a single touch.

BMW claims that iDrive 8.5 will have a home screen designed to make smart mobile phone users more comfortable. In addition to clearly organized functions, the updated infotainment system will have a menu structure similar to that of an iPhone, for example, giving users the option to customize and reconfigure the home screen to their liking.

BMW will gradually introduce the new 8.5 operating system across all of its model ranges. This system will continue to be based on Linux, while its successor, iDrive 9 which, according to BMW, is still under development, will move to an Android architecture. The two, however, will have a lot in common when it comes to basic structure and logic.
