Sergio Pérez cannot be world champion. so you think Jenson Button. The one who was a teammate of ‘Checo’ at McLaren in 2013 assures that the bad moment that the Mexican is going through rules him out of the fight for the championship.
Pérez is currently going through his worst streak as a Red Bull driver. The one from Jalisco has failed to reach Q3 in any of the last three grands prixsomething that has not happened with a Red Bull driver since David Coulthard did it in 2008.
In addition, in those three races he has not managed to finish above fourth position, losing 53 points with respect to a Max Verstappen already leads him by 69 units.
For Jenson Button, that advantage is already insurmountable for the Mexican. “After three weekends, there is no way to reach Max anymorehe’s gone, and the championship is definitely his”, the Briton assured in statements to ‘Sky Sports F1’.
Button believes that, in addition to the points that Pérez has lost, the poor performance of the Mexican has served to reinforce Verstappen’s morale: “When Max watches his teammate have a tough weekend, it only helps boost his confidence.“.
However, the Englishman does not believe that the ‘Czech’ seat at Red Bull is in danger, at least until the end of the season: “I don’t think it will be for a year.”
And although his performance is below expectations, he also does not believe that Helmut Marko and Christian Horner are thinking of replacing him in the face of 2024 in the absence of a guaranteed substitute “But, at the end of this season, who knows? Although… . who would you put there? It’s complicated“.
For the 2009 champion, although Pérez’s performance is not as expected, he is the best option to accompany Verstappen.
“Obviously, they have Daniel Ricciardo there as ambassadorbut I don’t know if they’re willing to put him in that seat. I also don’t think they upload anyone by AlphaTauri. De Vries has not been as competitive as they thought and would they put Tsunoda in the A team?” Button said.
For this reason, he believes that Red Bull will have no other option than to continue betting on Pérez even if he does not finish convincing the Red Bull leadership. “It’s hard for them, but sorry for czech. He’s been below his level for three races in a row and that’s tough,” Jenson Button said.
