The two Spanish drivers on the grid formula 1, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), insisted that their rivalry does not affect the friendship between the two, at the press conference prior to the Austrian Grand Prix. Alonso, of 41 years and double world champion, and Sainzof 28they will meet again on the track next weekend and they denied that their relationship has deteriorated as some Spanish media published.

The veteran Aston Martin driver described the level of Spanish journalism as “low” and pointed out this reason as “one of the many why, unfortunately, we try to avoid our path“.

After two disappointing seasons in the team AlpineAlonso is being one of the revelations of the season with his Aston Martin, with which he has climbed to the podium in six of the eight races held and is third in the World Cup with 117 pointssecond only to the two Red Bull (195 for max verstappen and 127 for Sergio Pérez). Carlos Sainz and Ferrari are having more problems and the pilot from Madrid occupies the 5 square in the classification, with 68 points, twelve more than his teammate charles leclerc.

Alonso and Sainz have had several electric duels this season and a maneuver by Madrid caused the Asturian to spin in Australia. Despite everything, both insisted that their relationship is good. “We are good friends inside and outside the circuits,” Alonso declared, in the presence of Sainz, before the journalists. “A lot of nonsense has been written and this year, as I have a competitive car and we are fighting closely on the track… In Spain we are like that”, added the Asturian.

Sainz, for his part, admitted that this season he is competing with Alonso for the same positions, but that this has not affected their friendship. “We don’t need a press conference to prove it or prove it. If you see us at the drivers’ parade or in the paddock, you’ll see that our relationship is the same as always“.

And he claimed that both are already veterans enough to “know separate what happens on the track and off it“. “We just want to enjoy the moment, because it’s a good time for F1 in Spain and it’s not worth spoiling it with stupid things that can be said,” he added. “It’s not even worth paying attention to or commenting on (their supposed enmity), because it’s giving importance to people who only want to do evil“, denounced the man from Madrid.

If they both finish on the podium this weekend, it will be the first time in history that two Spanish riders finished on a podium in an F1 race. “Fernando is on the podium in almost every race, so I’m the one preventing that from happening,” he joked. And to end with humor, Alonso gave the recipe to achieve that historic milestone: “That the two Red Bulls do not finish“.
