Goodyear presents a tire with organic and recycled materials

Achieving sustainable mobility is not only in charge of electric vehicles, but also of the materials that compose them. One of the components that suffers the most wear are the tires, and they are also usually quite polluting in their manufacturing process.

With this in mind, Goodyear presented at CES 2023, the most important technology fair in the world, a new tire made from 90% organic and recycled materialswhich has already gone through all the internal regulatory tests for use on public roads and which, apparently, will be the future for our vehicles.

Called BetterFuture, this tire employs several natural alternatives to what is usually synthetic. For example, Silica to improve grip is obtained from rice hull waste, while ISCC certified mass balance polymers are obtained from biocircular feedstock. In the new recipe too soybean oil is included to keep the tire flexible in changing temperatures and pine resin is also usedwhich replaces standard petroleum-based resins and by the way, gives it a characteristic perfume.

The steel cords inside the tire come from recycled products and are produced using the electric arc furnace process. This is a more efficient and cleaner method of producing steel than a blast furnace, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the brand, this new compound meets the requirements set by the regulators, as well as its own internal testing procedures. It’s more, this new formula has the advantage of obtaining less rolling resistance than traditional tireswhich can generate better efficiency in both electric and combustion vehicles.

Goodyear still needs to adjust the scale measurements before bringing the demo tire to market. The company plans to bring a tire made from 70 percent sustainable material to market first this year. and by 2030, have a 100 percent ecological tire.
