How to maintain your helmet

Cleaning our helmet when we return from each ride or trip is almost like a dig, as it closes a good return home after what we experienced on the road. Surely some do not see it that way, but for others, it is a way of giving back to the helmet what it does for us, and what better than giving it its own SPA.

The objective is to leave it clean, remove residue from insects, asphalt, rain, mud, recondition the visor (mica), as well as wash and sanitize the internal components so that the next time you use it, it will be as good as new.

Materials and supplies

You can have almost everything at home, for example, cloths or plain soap, but for best results, add the following to the list:

  • Liquid wax for dry cleaning
  • Polish for lenses or headlights
  • neutral sanitizer
  • Quick detail for surfaces
  • Microfiber cloths.

1. Disarmed. Remove the mica or visor from the helmet, as well as the internal components (mats, covers, even the intercom if you have one. This will allow you to better manipulate the helmet and carry out a correct external cleaning.

two. Carcass. With a slightly damp microfiber cloth, clean the surface of the helmet, nooks and crannies, air inlets, the lens mechanism, as well as the mechanical system, if your helmet is modular. Be sure to clean the lens mount (outline) as well.

3. Cleaning and sanitizing. With a different cloth, clean the inside of the helmet. Pay special attention to the front part because that is where the greatest amount of bacteria can accumulate, you can even apply neutral sanitizer and clean with the same cloth. Repeat this operation a couple of times.

Four. Inner lining. While the helmet is “airing”, you can take the opportunity to wash the liners or inner lining that, for the most part, are removable precisely for this process. This will remove sweat and dirt that gradually cause bad odors.

5. the mica. Usually a damp cloth works well. But if for some reason it was scratched or the rain was very acidic, a light treatment with special polish for micas will be enough to remove marks and restore its original shine.

6. Detailed. Once the helmet is completely clean, with the internal liner dry and in place, it is time to apply liquid wax or the quick detailer of your favorite brand. Spray generously and with a clean cloth spread the product evenly. You can also apply special spray silicone to give it extra protection.

Finally, mount the mica again and voila! Your helmet is ready for the next ride.
