Hydrogen mobility is already with us and little by little we will see more of them on the streets. This is an example brought to us by Hyundai.
What’s happening?
Hyundai introduced its new Xcient Fuel Cell truck, which is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system and will be used in the US commercial vehicle market. This during the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo (ACT) in Las Vegas.
First released in 2020, Xcient Fuel Cell has been deployed in five countries including Switzerland, Germany, Israel, Korea and New Zealand and has successfully logged over 4 million miles so far.. It is the only heavy-duty fuel cell electric model with a proven track record of real-world application and technological reliability. The model shown at the event is the 6×4 trailer equipped with two 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell systems (total power 180 kW) and a 350 kW electric motor. Its gross combined weight is a maximum of 37,194 kg and it offers a driving range of more than 724 km per charge, when fully loaded.

At the truck launch conference, Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Business at Hyundai Motor stated, “We strongly believe that hydrogen is one of the most powerful and pragmatic solutions to achieve our vision. of ‘Progress for Humanity’ with emission-free mobility as a fundamental pillar for a sustainable society”. “Our hydrogen fuel cell technology has been an industry first, with a real-world proven track record of efficiency and durability.. We are building on these merits to further transform transportation with hydrogen power for a wide range of mobility applications, including commercial vehicles, marine vessels, and even air mobility. We are now looking beyond mobility to an integrated hydrogen ecosystem, from production to storage, transportation and delivery. Hyundai is in a unique position to cover all aspects and offer a seamless solution across the entire value chain.”

Finally with significant support from the US government, and more players entering the hydrogen market, Hyundai Motor is confident that the total cost of ownership of hydrogen-powered trucks will be greatly reduced.
