Carlos Sainz he will always remember the 2022 season as the year he won his first race in Formula 1. Despite having added several podiums and pole positions, the pilot of ferrari He has recognized that it has been the most mentally difficult season in his sports career.
In an interview for ‘Mundo Deportivo’, the man from Madrid acknowledges that he put a lot of pressure on himself because he knew they were going to be very competitive: “I’m sure mentally it has been the most difficult year of my career because there were expectations, especially those that I put on myself, that if I had a competitive car to fight for a World Cup, it would be there”.
“Unfortunately, I found a very different car from last year., I didn’t do him. That made me aware that I had to change several things in my riding to bring it to my style,” Sainz added about his start to the season, in which he made several mistakes that eliminated him from the fight for the title.
Despite this, he has taken those mistakes as learning: “It has given me the opportunity to improve as a driver, open up my range of driving styles and know how to set up a car. I have improved a lot as a pilot“.
The second half of the championship has gone much better for Carlos Sainz, although the Ferrari’s performance has dropped: “Since the middle of the season I’ve been going very fast for one lap. In race pace there are still things to improve on both my side and the team’s , but next year it is a new car in which we are going to try to improve its weaknesses.
“I want to have a mid-season that allows me to stay up there in the fight. I know my second halves of the year are usually strong so it’s a good sign what we’re seeing at the end of this year and hopefully I can build on this base.” for next year,” he continued.
Although there are two races left to finish this season, the man from Madrid is already thinking about 2023 and his goals: “I have the ambition to be world champion, if possible in 2023, or if not in 2024, that I still have two years of contract. I know the things that I have to improve and the things that I am going to work on for next year. I consider that I am now in the sweetest moment of my sporting career, at 28 years old and with a lot of time ahead of me.”
