And now there has been a new clash between the two, after the Englishman came out to respond some statements from the Asturian who claimed that Verstappen’s titles had more merit than Hamilton’s.
Alonso spoke to ‘De Teelegraaf’, a Dutch newspaper, before the Mexican Grand Prix. And he valued the title won by Max Verstappen in 2021: “I have great respect for Lewis, but it is different to win seven championships when you have only had to fight against your partner. A title like that has less value than when you have less titles, but you have had to fight against pilots equal to or with better material than you”.
These statements, although they could also be understood as valuing the titles he won beating Michael Schumacher in 2005 and 2006, they caused a stir and part of the fans put it as a direct attack on the Mercedes driver.
Alonso posted a tweet claiming that his statement was misunderstood and taken out of context: “And again. Please, all titles are amazing, deserving and inspiring. Incomparable with any other and we are going to enjoy the champions and legends of our time. Tired of the constant search for headlines. Let’s enjoy them.”
Despite this publication of the Asturian trying to relax the atmosphere, Lewis Hamilton added fuel to the fire. Silent all these days, the English posted a photo on Twitter from Indianapolis 2007, a race that he won ahead of Alonso. That year was the Englishman’s first season in Formula 1 and he tied for points in the World Championship with Alonso, who had come from two consecutive titles. Despite the draw, Hamilton was ahead in the standings by adding another second place, although that title was taken by Kimi Raikkonen.
