Mercedes, very far from the performance of the best in a year in which they have not even been able to compete. Neither lewis hamilton neither George Russell have been able to compete with max verstappen and his Red Bull. Something that has made the veteran pilot, seven times Formula 1 champion, desperate and angry at times.
Mercedes, in the mouth of Toto Wolff, has recognized the “mistakes” that have condemned the team. The head of the team has done so on the official podcast of the ‘Beyond The Grid’ competition: “We won the Constructors’ Championship in December and in March We were in no man’s land.”
“We underestimated the challenge of running with the car so low and the rivals have done a better job, they have been more focused in certain areas in particular. No one is afraid to say that we have not done wellwe have failed and others have succeeded”, comments the Austrian.
Although he qualifies that perhaps all these mistakes will make them wake up in the immediate future: “I think that sometimes you have to make mistakes and fail to prosper. No sport has seen the same team or person win every year in its history.”
“The learning has been hardTalking about it is one thing, but seeing the recovery week by week puts you to the test. We have had moments of pressure and perhaps I have put too much pressure on the group”, explains Wolff.
Speaking of the “hardest moments” of the season, he recalls the difficulties in solving the famous ‘porposing’: “The hardest moment was when we didn’t know how to fix the car’s defects. We didn’t know if it was ‘porpoising'”.
