Mercedes Concept EQT Marco Polo, the next battery camping

The Mercedes EQT is the version with an electric motor of its access van with the soul of a compact minivan, the Mercedes T-Class. As a preview of this model, the brand shows the Mercedes Concept EQT Marco Polo, very close to the production version that we should meet in mid-2023.

This compact-sized campervan is built on the long-wheelbase EQT, measuring around 4,910mm in length (the short body of the T-Class we tested is 4,498mm long, 1,859mm wide and 1,819mm high). This longer body, with six seats, arrives in 2023 with all the mechanics.

Like the Mercedes T-Class Marco Polo, it is a camperization module, developed by Brabus to sell an adventurous philosophy of this electric van that justifies the premium over other alternatives. Integrated into the boot, it includes drawers, a fridge, a sink with a tap and a 12-litre water tank or a gas stove. The brand indicates that all this furniture can be removed by two people in less than 5 minutes and use the car as a vehicle on a day-to-day basis.

And, of course, it includes a bed, with a box spring that unfolds over the module together with a 10 cm thick mattress, resulting in a bed 2 meters long by 1.15 meters wide. The bed can be folded on the rear seats, they should not be condemned on a trip. If the pop-up roof is included, you can stand up in the back… and have an extra bed above (1.97 x 0.97 meters). The rear windows have a six-theme that darkens at the push of a button.

The car’s powertrain is otherwise the same as the Renault Kangoo E-Tech, with an electric drive of 90 kW (122 hp) and 245 Nm of torque. It is fed by the energy stored in a lithium-ion battery with a 45 kWh capacity, with which it certifies 282 km of autonomy in the WLTP cycle. Consumption is high due to weight, 19 kWh/100 km. Allows alternating current loads of up to 22 kW of power and up to 80 kW of direct current.

Something that may not reach production, or at most will come as an extra, is the solar panel on the folding roof. The idea is that the camping module can supply itself with energy while it is stopped, without reducing autonomy. It also has an additional battery in a seat drawer, which can be removed to charge at home or in the camping area.

On the outside there are not too many differences with a Kangoo, because it has a grille to use and the same LED headlights. Inside there are also many similarities, such as the air conditioning controls, but it has air vents more typical of the Stuttgart brand or the MBUX infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen… and up to 7 USB sockets.
