The aid of 20 cents per liter that has been active almost all year is suppressed for private clients and will be exclusive to the professional group as of the first day of 2023.

It was an open secret and what had been suspected in recent days has just become official: the Government has eliminated the bonus widespread to fuel for the year 2023 and has decided to keep it only for the group of professionals (carriers, farmers, shipping companies and fishermen). This implies that the discount of 20 cents per liter will disappear on January 1 for private customers. This was announced by the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezduring his appearance after the meeting of the last Council of Ministers this year.

The favorable and downward evolution of fuel prices has been the main reason for the suppression of a bonus that, according to Sánchez himself, has had a undoubted positive effect on millions of workers”. In the absence of days before the end of the year, the average price of a liter of gasoline in Spain is at 1.57 euros while the price of diesel does the same at 1.64 euros when drivers have not been driving for more than six months. Spaniards were paying 2.15 and 2.10 euros, respectively.

This bonus initially arose from the dialogue between the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda and the carriers gathered in the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC), which brings together the main employers in the sector, although finally, the Executive decided to expand and apply it to the population as a whole, in line with the measures taken in the rest of Europe, such as in Portugal or France, to cushion the impact of the rise in prices as a result of the war in Ukraine.

In the first instance, the measure was applied until June 30 through the first response plan to the war, approved at the end of March, but it was extended in June with the approval of the second major plan to deal with the resulting crisis. of the Russian invasion. Their cost for the first three months was estimated at 1,423 million eurosso for the set of nine months would amount to more than 4,000 million eurosthis being another of the main reasons why its elimination would have been decided.

Those who will continue to have said reduction will be the colective of professionals, varying, that is, in the way of recovering the discount. For carriers that already use professional diesel, the bonus will be paid at the end of each month until March 31, 2023; while for farmers, direct aid will be applied through the refund of the special hydrocarbons tax. On the other hand, a direct aid system is established for companies and self-employed workers who do not benefit from the return of professional diesel.
