race-inspired hybrid prototype

The Toyota Prius is a model that will go down in history for being the true promoter of hybrid technology that is so present today. It was in 1997 when the Japanese model surprised with that electrification to achieve a refined operation and really low consumption. What could never be said is that it had precisely a sporting focus. At least until now, when the Toyota Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Editiona prototype with an eye on competition.

This copy serves to celebrate the centenary of one of the most popular tests in the motor sector, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in a somewhat surprising way. Toyota’s participation in the Circuit de a Sarthe over time has been very outstanding and that includes five consecutive victories in recent editions. While it remains to be seen if they win the crown for the sixth time, they present this prototype that serves to show What are alternative energies capable of doing? applied to the competition.

The Japanese firm has been competing with hybrid systems in endurance races (such as the WEC or Le Mans) since 2012. In recent times, it has even dared with hydrogen combustion technology, achieving surprising results. In this case, the Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition receives some elements of the GR010 Hybrid of Toyota Gazoo Racing that competes in the WEC. They help to improve its performance and its aerodynamics mainly, although we do not know if they have also dared to modify its mechanics.

The mark tells us that all the aerodynamic additives such as the side skirts, the canards, the large spoiler or the rear diffuser. There are also some very aerodynamic 18-inch wheels that are fitted with 235/50R tires, while its suspension has been revised. On the other hand, the hood is carbon fiber to lower its weight and has additional LED lighting to improve visibility at night. It’s too soon to say if it opens the door for a possible spicier version of the production Prius signed by GR or is it a simple design exercise.
