In May, five months of favorable sales were chained, accumulating 404,337 units, 26.9% more than the same period of the previous year. In May there were more than 90,000 contracts.
Another month comes to an end and with it the registration data comes to light in what only goes to show that this 2023 will finally break the negative trend lived in recent years since 2020 with the arrival of COVID-19. Because so far this year new car sales have risen no less than 26.7% compared to the same period last year, already accumulating a total of 404,337 units. A figure that has been achieved because in May hiring was closed again in positive, specifically with a 8.3% rise to reach 92,025 units. However, despite this improvement in the data, if we compare the general market with that of 2019 at this point in time, the decrease is still close to 30%.
Continuing with the less rosy news, although registrations by channels registered increases in all of them with respect to the previous year, we must highlight the low rate of entry that comes from the channel of individuals. These sales reached a total of 36,495 units in May, which represents a growth of 5.3% compared to 2022 but a sharp decrease of 33% compared to 2019. For its part, the rental channel grew 19%, with 21,708 2 sales, while the business market achieved 33,822 new registrations, growing 5.4% more and reaching similar records to 2019.
Toyota, immovable

New Toyota Corolla 2023, the entire family
As usual, SUVs continue to be the silhouette that brings together the most sales in our market with almost 55% of total sales, with the compact category taking the cake with 30% of the total in May and 31.7% accumulated, reaching 127,009 units in the latter case totals. The B-SUVs are around a 21% share with 87,229 accumulated units, while the utilities continue to be the third alternative with a 17.3% share and almost 70,000 sales.
By brands there is no doubt either and Toyota is already gathering all the ballots to once again be the best-selling car brand in Spain. This was the case in May with 7,842 units, almost 1,200 units more than the second and third, Peugeot and Renault, respectively, whose difference between them was only 51 registrations. This allows the Japanese to increase the distance in the accumulated where it has already achieved 34,124 units compared to the 29,771 of Peugeot itself and the 28,416 sales of Seat.
On the other hand, although it is an outstanding leader in the hybrid segment and manages to place 2 models among the 10 best sellers on the market, it is again the Dacia Sandero and the Seat Arona that are placed higher. The Romanian is once again the most in demand in our country in May and, thanks to the almost 1,000 units that it has taken from the Arona in this fifth month, overall it stands at 388 units of the Spanish SUV with 11,309 registrations compared to 11,697. . Third place goes to Toyota’s C-HR, which with 9,156 registrations is also the most commercialized hybrid in Spain.
The electric ones continue to grow

because this technology, the hybrid, continues to be the one that pulls the cart in terms of electrification refers to representing 25% of total registrations. Toyota here is also intractable and in addition to the C-HR it has the Corolla as the second best-selling model and the Yaris Cross as the third best-selling model. However, another month they return to be the The electrical ones that generate the greatest growth and in May rose 108% compared to 2022 with 5,081 units sold. Now, although the total 23,124 are 75% more than what was sold in 2022 at this point, they only represent 4.87% of the market.
Almost the same quota proposed by the phev that accumulate a total of 25,369 units, 6,065 of which were registered in May (growing 25.5%), only represent 5.34%. That is to say, that between two technologies with plug currently sold only represent 10% market sharealmost 3 points from the European average and very far from other markets such as the French, the German or, logically, the Norwegian and the Dutch.
The electrified leaders

The Tesla Model Y is the zero emission market leader
Going to the leaders in each segment, Tesla is still intractable within the electric pure because in May it has placed the Model 3 as first with 577 units and the Model Y, the best selling car in the world so far this year, as the second thanks to the 536 units. The third has once again been the MG 4, consolidating the commitment of the Chinese brand. In the accumulated, the Model Y remains intractable with 2,401 units, followed by the MG 4, with 1,398 and the FIAT 500e with 1,117 units.
In phev, the Lynk & Co 01 has already managed to unseat the Ford Kuga Well, it has been the best-selling model in May with 934 units, which already allows it to accumulate 2,455 units, almost 500 more than the American that in May could only be fifth with 281 units. The general podium is closed by the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid that little by little is recovering ground. In hybrids, Toyota’s dominance is overwhelming since the Japanese company has the C-HR, Corolla and Yaris Cross in the top 3 of the year.
