The FIA will not allow from 2023 that drivers express themselves with political and social demands in the Formula 1 paddock. Something that caused the indignation of lewis hamilton and now of Sebastian Vettelalready retired from the competition.
In statements to ‘AutoBild’, he described these rules as “nonsense”: “I hope that the drivers continue to have the courage to defend their opinion and express it.”
“Of course, you always have to review the topic. But I think it is absolutely important to take a position on some issues and we have seen in recent years that more and more people have taken a position,” says the former German driver.
As of this season, the FIA does not allow “political, religious or personal comments”.
The Hamilton Threat
On January 5th, Hamilton was very clear in ‘New York Times’, threatening to quit Formula 1: “If I can’t have conversations with people, if I can’t talk about such sensitive issues, they won’t have the impact they should.”
“If I can’t defend human rights and I can’t continue what I’ve been doing these years, I prefer not to run anymore“said the seven-time champion of the Great Circus.
