Ferrari has not been able to compete for the championship this season. Despite the good start, despite the results, especially from Charles Leclec, they have been far away. Max Verstappen and Red Bull have been unattainablealready champions with two races still to go (Brazil and Abu Dhabi).
The Monegasque is clear about what they need to improve for 2023. In statements to ‘Motorsport’, he detailed the four aspects that have to change: “Currently, I think the points where we have to improve are the tire management, communication, strategy and reliability”.
“At the start of the season our car was generally better than the Red Bull. Then they took several steps forward. We saw what they brought to the track on many weekends, and from our side this led to a difference in performance between classification and race”, comments Leclerc.
Although it is clear to him that they have improved somewhat in a year in which they have been able to regularly fight for victories: “I think we have advanced a little in communication and strategy. Especially in the last few races, the team has done a great job on these aspects and I have seen the progress.”
In the remaining two races, Ferrari cannot afford to lose second place in the constructors’ championship. Currently Mercedes is at forty points and increasing its pace as the weekends progress. In Mexico they were well ahead of the two red cars, climbing Lewis Hamilton to the drawer.
Looking ahead to the drivers’ championship, Leclerc has lost second place. It is Sergio Perez who has overtaken him, with 280 points. Carlos Sainzmeanwhile, is sixth with 212 points, four behind George Russellthe second of the Mercedes behind Lewis Hamilton.
