The headlights with which Porsche wants driving at night to become day

The car lightingIt has evolved remarkably since its origins. From oil lamps they went to electric lights and little by little lighting has been improved to levels that were previously unthinkable. It seems science fiction to talk about systems like the Porsche HD Matrix LED that is present in the most recent models of the brand. It is practically capable of turning night into day thanks to its power and its ability to reach a distance of up to 600 meters with unprecedented functions.

As its name suggests, it is a high-resolution lighting matrix technology that is made up of no less than 16,000 individually controllable micro-LEDs. They are divided into two sets per headlamp, four in total, to achieve a brightness that is double that of the previous generation. There is talk that it is capable of covering an area four times greater than other systems and that with high beams it is capable of reach a distance of 600 meters. All this in a more efficient way and without dazzling other road users.

The new Porsche headlights They are distinguished by the four dots, with two HD matrix modules and two dual function modules (crossover and long range). With this arrangement in the shape of a square, it responds to a characteristic design of the brand and complements each other to achieve the best lighting. The two lower modules, despite their small footprint, each house 16,384 individual light-emitting diodes with a brightness adjustable in 1,024 levels. The key is that they can also cover an angle of 40º wide by 10º high for the exteriors and 20×5º for the interiors.

That makes for outstanding visibility in any condition and also for there to be new features to improve security. Additional long-range lighting appears in the main beam to reach 600 meters in length. There is also an anti-glare function so that the oncoming vehicle is left without lighting by turning off the corresponding pixels. The lighting of the lane itself has been baptized as a luminous carpet for the ability it has to adjust to the lines of the road.

In work zones or lane narrowing, said luminous carpet is capable of intelligently reducing itself to the width of the vehicle. The adaptive high beam also adapts the light distribution to the conditions in an improved way compared to the previous generation. And you couldn’t expect less from the Porsche HD-Matrix LED than a new welcome and farewell animation each time the user enters or exits the vehicle.
