On June 3, the seven years after the accident that cost Luis Salom his life. It happened at the Montmeló circuit during free practice for the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix in the Moto2 category.
Salom maintained a great rivalry with Maverick Viñales, who took the Moto3 title from him in 2012, although the fight on the track, far from confronting them, brought them even closer.
Viñales bought the motorcycle with which Luis Salom competed the previous year “three or four years ago”, which had a special value, since it was the first with which he achieved a podium in the world championship.
But a few weeks ago, coinciding with the seventh anniversary of the death of the ‘Mexican’, which is what his friends called Salom, Viñales decided to surprise the Mallorcan’s mother.
“I did not say anything to anyone, I kept everything quiet because I am a person who likes to be discreet and I do things for myself, those that seem fair to me. In the end, I have also had a loss in my family and it is hard. I think it’s important that they can have unique things from Luis, and I think that was a unique piece.“, Viñales explained in statements to ‘DAZN’.
The Figueres pilot assures that the gesture was totally spontaneous. “The other day I was at home and I thought, ‘this bike has to be in its place‘. And with my worker we decided to send her, and she’s done. We didn’t say anything either, just I told María (Salom’s mother), ‘a package will arrive, you’ll tell me something’“said Maverick Viñales.
