There is little doubt that the traditional combustion cars are destined to disappear. The regulations tighten around them and here in Europe their sale will be prohibited from 2035. The electrification that is already important today will be the norm and the electric car will be practically the only option in the future. However, there are other parts of the world that do not follow the same rhythm and that even try to go against the current. For example, Wyoming wants to ban electric cars in the next decade.
It is not a mistake, the state of Wyoming, in the northwest of the United States, is carrying out a totally unprecedented movement and it has an explanation. Despite being one of the least populated states in the country, it has a very powerful oil and gas industry. Logically, the total electrification of the car does not benefit them at all and could end their main source of income, so they have started a campaign that attracts a lot of attention. They have introduced a resolution that has quite a few supporters in the Wyoming House of Representatives and Senate.
It’s titled “Phasing Out New Electric Vehicle Sales by 2035” and is about trying to ban electric in the long run. However, when going into detail in this document, seems more like a symbolic opposition than a firm resolution to carry it out. What they ask in sections 1 and 2 is that the legislature eliminate that goal of selling only new electric vehicles in the state of Wyoming by 2035. In short, “that Wyoming industries and citizens be encouraged to limit the sale and purchase of new electric vehicles in Wyoming with the goal of phasing out the sale of new electric vehicles by 2035.”
Therefore, it would be something that would affect at the state level and that is difficult to become possible. This region with little more than half a million inhabitants (0.17% of the US total) is the eighth largest oil producer in the country and has to be seen. Precisely that resolution seems like a movement to get attention, a call for help so they don’t abandon all those people who depend on this industry. In these lines they also took the opportunity to criticize the recycling of electric car batteries and other negative points of this technology.
