On Valentine’s Day 1995, United States bodybuilding champion Ray McNeil was strangling her wife, bodybuilder Sally, when Sally grabbed a shotgun and fired two fatal shots at him. Sally had a well-documented history of being a victim of abuse and stated that it was an almost instantaneous decision, made in self-defense to save her life. But the prosecution argued that it was premeditated murder, the revenge of a jealous and aggressive wife. They called her a “badass”, “bully” or “monster”. The media dubbed her the “muscled bride” or the “hunky princess”. Sally says that her whole life she did what she could to survive, trapped in a cycle of violence that began in childhood and ended with Ray’s death. This complex story about a true murder examines violence against women, gender roles and the world of bodybuilding.
