Polluting emissions are one of the main causes of cars not passing the ITV in the Community of Madrid.
They are data from the Community of Madrid, but they can be extrapolated to the rest of Spain. We are talking about the results of the inspections carried out by the ITV (Technical Vehicle Inspection) stations during the year 2022, which have produced some worrying data.
According to the information provided by the Vehicle Archive of the Community of Madrid to Aema-ITV (Association of Entities for the Technical Inspection of Vehicles of the Community of Madrid), 2,328,849 analyzes of vehicles were carried out in the community and, although 82 percent of cars qualified on the first try (93 percent, to the second), there is a fault that is responsible for a third of the failures.

These are polluting emissions, which accumulated 33 percent of the rejections, proof that we have an aging car park that pollutes more than what is allowed. At the same level, although with one percentage point more (34 percent), we find the failings for the “Axles, Wheels, Tires and Suspension” system.
Returning to the issue of emissions, we are facing a very important aspect and that, if the data improves, could avoid 575 premature deaths per year from particle exposure, according to the study “Contribution of the Technical Inspection of Vehicles to road safety and the environment”. In fact, if that 33 percent had approved in the emissions section, 207 premature deaths would have been avoided.
Another conclusion from these data is thatThe older the vehicle, the more likely it is to fail the MOT at first. In this, the fact of carrying out adequate maintenance of the vehicle is of great importance, which makes the percentages of approvals improve.

In line with these data, Jorge Soriano, president of Aema-ITV has stated that “these data show that the vast majority of vehicles that go to Madrid stations pass the technical inspection”. Something that contrasts with the fear of going to this mandatory inspection: “your concern should be not to go, since it has been shown that the ITV saves lives”.
