Let’s go back to 1967 when Caine starred in “A Job in Italy”, a film that stands out for one of the biggest car chases ever filmed and that Caine made at the age of 35 and without a car or driving license. To make amends, and after receiving a large salary for “Thief for Love,” Caine purchased his Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Drophead Coupe in 1968. The car was a canceled order from Terence Rattigan, screenwriter and playwright.

Finished in black with magnolia leather, Caine opted to hire a chauffeur instead of putting “L” plates on his Rolls-Royce. Owned by Caine for two years, the Drophead Coupe later became the property of Jack Leach, a restaurant chain owner who kept it until his death in 2013. The Rolls-Royce subsequently underwent an extensive restoration .

Hand-built bodywork by Mulliner Park Ward will have contributed to the high list price. The engine is a 6.2-liter V8 connected to a four-speed automatic transmission and a Citroën-licensed hydropneumatic suspension.
Its high cost made it only 506 Drophead Coupe will be built, making them a rarity even when compared to the total number of Silver Shadows made. Because of its rarity alone, this Rolls-Royce would fetch a high price at auction.
