Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years Edition, the most powerful in its entire history

To celebrate two decades of the sportiest division of the Wolfsburg firm, the Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years Edition. This special edition of the Volkswagen Golf commemorates the 20th anniversary of the R firm and with 333 hp It is the most powerful in the entire history of the German compact. It is possibly the latest model of the high-performance brand without any type of electrification and it has a very high price, of €68,915. A conventional Golf R costs 56,615 euros. The difference in price is explained by the greater power and equipment.

In 2002, Volkswagen made a splash in the sports compact segment with the first Golf R32. This equipped a 3.2-liter narrow-vee six-cylinder block (VR6) and four-wheel drive. With 241 hp Y 320Nm and weighing 1,477 kilograms, the first-generation Golf R32 could do the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and continue up to 247 km/h top speed. Only him Alfa Romeo 147 GTA offered similar figures, although the latter was front-wheel drive.

Although these are very decent numbers today, two decades do not pass in vain, and the Golf R 20 Years Edition once again sets the bar very high. Although based on the standard Golf R, the engine has been recalibrated for the occasion to go from 320 to 333 hp and some generous 420Nmbut claims that the turbocharger now runs at a constant speed at part throttles, improving recoveries.

This flow of power is delivered to all four wheels, but now it has a vector-type limited-slip rear differential so that all the power can pass from one wheel or the other. this makes the vehicle more agile and, with drift mode, it can drift.

For its part, the dual-clutch automatic gearbox (DSG) has been tuned in order to provide “remarkable feedback when upshifting”. That means that the brand has applied electronic management with more abrupt gear changes to increase the excitement, since the smooth changes of the original DSG transmission have always made it an easy car to drive. It completes 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and reaches 270 km/h (20 km/h more than the R to dry)

Another improvement is the call Emotion Start, a mode that revs the engine up to 2,500 rpm momentarily after pressing the start button. Combined with the “particularly striking driving acoustics”, which we take to mean it’s louder, this “further increases the anticipation of a typical R driving experience”.

Aesthetically, the Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years Edition is associated with the package R Performance (optional on regular Golf R). In addition to removing the top speed limiter and adding the torque vectoring control system and the driving modes system (mode drifting included), adds rear spoiler and alloy wheels estoril 19-inch with blue spokes; or you can stick with an all-black finish if you’d like. For its part, the Akrapovič exhaust system is part of the factory endowment.

Other differentiating elements are the “R” badges and the bluish exterior mirrors, although if you opt for the color blue pencil, the wing mirrors are finished in black. Likewise, the latter are equipped with a light that projects the “20 R” logo on the ground at nightfall. Inside, there is sport seats premium with climate control, upholstered in leather nappa with the “R” logo in blue embroidered on the backrest. Nor have they forgotten the moldings of100% real carbon fiber.

The Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years Edition will not be limited by a specific number of units, but by the fact that It will only be on sale for one year., with orders open from June 2 for the European, British and Australian markets. With it, Volkswagen is in charge of increasing the expectation, affirming that “it is already a collector’s item as a new car”.
