With the highest number of trips and, in some cases, the confusion caused by drivers, summer is the time of year when traffic agents issue the most fines. Of all of them we have compiled the 10 that are most repeated in these months of relaxation and enjoyment.
Summer is undoubtedly the most relaxing period of the year. The longest days, summer, the beach, the mountains and the tranquility of knowing that day after day your main concern will be rest and relaxation. But beware, be too relaxed can take its toll if you have to take the car in this summer period, a circumstance that can also be extrapolated to the other extreme, that of stress from wanting to get to everything as soon as possible.

With this, what we mean is that you have to be very careful with being distracted because that is when you get the fines. And it is that during the months of July and August it is very common for the roads to fill up with vehicles and with a summer of 2022 that was remembered for the premiere of some of the measures adopted by the DGT in the new Traffic Lawin relation to infractions with the aim of reducing road accidents to a minimum, it is vitally important that you take things easy… but not too much.
Furthermore, with the intensification of controls Scheduled for days in which more journeys are expected (ends and beginnings of the week that coincide with the end of the holidays or the departure operation of the last August Bridge), the fines for any of the following reasons do not stop growing.
These are the most common fines for the summer season
- Speed: almost 40% of the sanctions carried out by the DGT refer to this section. This is due to the fact that in summer there are holidays and large exit operations, which make some drivers despair and step on the accelerator more than they should. The fine ranges between 100 and 600 euros and can cost us up to six points on the card.
- Use the mobile phone: It is one of the measures that intensified the most with the Traffic Law that came into force last year. The use of mobile devices carries a financial penalty of 200 euros but, above all, the withdrawal of six points of circulation permit.
- Alcohol and drugs: the excesses in the summer parties and a longer time abroad cause some drivers to exceed the allowed rates. The value of the fine will depend on the infraction, but in both cases it can end up having to pay up to 1,000 euros and the withdrawal of six points from the card.
- Driving with flip flops or barefoot: the sweltering heat of this time makes some people choose to wear flip flops or drive without shoes. This fact is contrary to what is stipulated in the law when it indicates that footwear that is not attached to the foot is not allowed since it reduces the ability to react. In the same way, being barefoot can be classified by an agent as a reason that reduces the control conditions of the vehicle. The penalty varies between 80 and 200 euros.
- Not wearing a seat belt: Let’s remember that it is mandatory, despite the heat that its use may entail. It is penalized with the withdrawal of four points (before it was 3) and a financial penalty of 200 euros if the driver is the one who does without it. In the event that it is one of the passengers, only the economic sanction will be applied, while if it is a minor who is not wearing it, the sanction will fall on the driver.
- Driving shirtless: Something similar happens with footwear. It is true that in the middle of a heat wave, the use of the shirt on (more if the upholstery is leather). However, we will run the risk of suffering scratches or burns in the event of an accident and for this reason it is not allowed, entailing a penalty of 200 euros.
- Traveling without ITV or insurance: beyond recklessness, which it is, it may also be the result of oversight, especially if you have to renew the insurance (it is done automatically) or pass the ITV on these dates. However, forgetting it is not a condition for you to drive without insurance or inspection. In the first case, it is considered a serious fine that can be penalized up to 3,000 euros, also assuming that it causes a greater problem in the event that there is damage to third parties and we have to pay it entirely out of pocket. Regarding the ITV, the fine can be 200 euros if it has expired or increase up to 500 euros if it is not validated. Let’s remember that in addition to the economic part, driving without having passed the ITV can lead to the immobilization of the vehicle.
- Improper parking: In tourist areas it is difficult to find a place to park our car. It is for this reason that in summer the fines for parking in an incorrect location multiply. The infraction can be between 100 and 200 euros and suppose up to two less points on the card.
- Respect cyclists: This is another of the measures that have been reviewed with the new Traffic Law. In it, the number of points to be withdrawn has been increased to six (previously 4) if you do not leave the minimum 1.5 meter separation with cyclists on the road while the economic fine remains at 200 euros.
- throw objects: We all have something left over in the car but that is not a condition for you to throw it out the window, especially if it is an element that could cause a fire. For this reason, although the financial penalty of 200 euros is maintained, the number of points to be withdrawn from the driver’s license goes from four to six.
