This Wednesday Aston Martin and Honda announced their agreement for the year 2026. An agreement that received the ok of Fernando Alonso, the great figure of the team (four podiums in the first five races of the Formula 1 season). The big question is if the Asturian will continue in the competition by then, when he is already 44 years old.
At Aston Martin they think so. Mike Krackhead of the team, explained it this way upon his arrival at the Monaco circuit: “I think there is no reason to think that Fernando should not be with us in 2026I see no reason to believe that he won’t be here that year, at all.”
“I think one of the biggest things is that if you look at the 2026 power unit regulations, the chassis is going to be derived from it and there have already been working groups since February of last year. fully integrated to think about a good chassis for your interests”, says the head of the green team.
And it’s not the only one. Martin Whitmarsh, CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, said in the Honda presentation that although this would not be in Alonso’s plans at the start, it could change if the project aspires to be a winner.
“2026, who knows, is probably out of your planning right now. We have to give him a winning car. We have taken a step forward, but we are still not where we need to be. We will become stronger,” she said.
“I am sure that we will talk about Fernando’s future before 2026. It would be fantastic if he was as fit and competitive as he is now. Then it would be fantastic to have him in 2026 as well”, he concluded.
The two-time champion has already pointed out in some interviews that he does not see his retirement close. He signed a two-year contract with Aston Martin, but it was open to extension if both parties were happy. And it is clear that it is so. The project has surprised everyone and from the first moment the car has been competitive, placing itself behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and Checo Perez.
