He ssangyong towers It is the new model that will join the ranks of the Korean brand this summer. Although, in reality, it is much more. It is also the example with which the transformation of SsangYong into KG Mobility begins. It seems that it will start in early 2024, but before that the deployment of this will take place SUV that occupies that gap that was left in the range. He falls between the Korandos and Rextons, albeit with a slightly different philosophy. We have already met him in person and we tell you our opinion.
The name comes from National Park Torres del Paine, located in the Chilean part of the Andes Mountains. It is quite a declaration of intent on the part of the company, which has wanted to give a marked off-road character to this new SsangYong Torres. You can tell just by looking at its design, which has a multitude of winks and details. The front with that narrow grill with six vertical slats (in honor of the Big Dipper) is fully integrated with the headlights and the bumper is really voluptuous, marked by the fenders.
In the square wheel arches are located some tires that can go from 17 to 20 inches. There are roof bars and the mirrors have very off-road square shapes. Not to mention that C-pillar that goes in contrast and that slightly reminds us of the Defender or that very special rear. The rear has a gate in which simulates the shape of the spare tire in that area, a reference to the past. The handle is also on the side, although the door opens conventionally.
The color palette of this model offers up to seven shades: Grand White, Iron Metal, Platinum Gray, Forest Green, Cherry Red, Dandy Blue and Space Black. and yesf we said that the Torres is located between the Korando and the Rexton it is because of its dimensions. Has a 4,700mm length, a width of 1,890 mm, a height of 1,710 mm and its wheelbase goes up to 2,680 mm. That translates to being 250mm longer than the Korando and 150mm shorter than the Rexton.
From the inside, it must be said that it could be comparable to that of its older brother for quality and technology. It has the latest multimedia system of the brand, with a 12.3 inch touch screen that seems to have an exemplary behavior. It is complemented by a mixed instrumentation, with a 4.3-inch screen. It is pleasantly surprising to see the color combinations that can be chosen for the Torres cabin, including one in Khaki that wins integers.
Although it is a SsangYong and that also translates into looking for the maximum interior space and comfort. In the rear seats we saw a very generous hole for both the legs and the heads, being a true five-seater. It would even have space for a third row, but the brand claims that this option will remain exclusive to the Rexton. Of the trunk it must be said that they speak of 839 liters with their particular measurement up to the ceiling. Even the tray we have a few left more realistic 599 liters which, even so, are above average.
The SsangYong Torres will come in a single version with the gasoline engine 1.5 GDI Turbo four-cylinder and a power of 163 CV and 280 Nm of torque. For 2024 there is talk of an electric variant that will have a different approach, but for now we will settle for this version. You can have the ECO label thanks to the transformation to LPG they offer from the brand and there are also other options. The SUV can be chosen with a six-speed manual gearbox or with a AISIN automatic transmission also 6 relations.
Not to mention that there is an automatic version with the 4WD all wheel drive, which also wants to be the hallmark of this model. In fact, it boasts some off-road skills quite good thanks to an attack angle of 18.2º, a ventral angle of 21.7º and a departure angle of 17.6º. It’s not a true all-rounder of yesteryear, but it also offers a ground clearance of 195 mm. On the other hand, the equipment related to driving aids will be quite complete.
Another good news is that the price will be at a level more typical of a lower segment. It will be one of the cheapest large SUVs due to a starting fee of 31,000 euros for those who book in summer during the launch campaign. In fact, they tell us that it could stay at 29,500 euros by taking the financing with the brand. And the price range would move up to 40,000 euros for the most equipped, which is not bad at all. We’ll be looking forward to September so we can fully test it.
