Audi Activesphere Concept: crossover, coupe and pick-up?

Audi has released in recent years a series of prototypes under the name “sphere” with those who try to anticipate what their future will be like. After seeing some like the Skysphere Concept, the Grandsphere Concept or the Urbansphere Concept; The fourth model of the saga arrives. Its about Audi Activesphere Concept, an impressive coupé-style crossover that wants to stand out for its capabilities both on and off the road. In fact, this specimen also has some hidden surprises.

With their 4.98 meters long, is prepared for all kinds of uses. At first glance it would be a kind of SUV coupé, with a Sportback-style rear that Audi has worked so hard in recent years. However, the prototype has the quality of being able to convert its rear into a open cargo compartment like a pick-up just touching a button. In this way, all kinds of objects can be loaded, thinking about some sports accessories such as bicycles, surfboards or skis.

Other qualities that can be seen on the outside are the 22-inch wheels, with active elements to allow more or less air to pass through, and a generous 208mm ground clearance. The Audi Activesphere Concept seems ready to go off the asphalt thanks to a suspension that is adaptive and can raise the body up to 40 mm depending on the needs. With this, the prototype achieves an entry angle of 18.9º and an exit angle of 28.1º.

The most aesthetically striking thing about this model is not that it is painted in Arctic Teal or that it maintains a faired Singleframe grill. Neither one worked lighting with micro-LED technology. It is precisely the “Active Back” cargo compartment that is achieved by folding horizontally the lower vertical segment of the rear. The position of the pillars is maintained, but leaves additional space to carry all kinds of objects.

The interior of the Audi Activesphere Concept is functional and minimalist, with ample space for all its occupants and contrasting colors for its four individual seats. It must be said that the prototype is prepared for autonomous driving and, therefore, it presents all kinds of technological innovations. premieres the Audi Dimension system, which benefit from details such as mixed reality headsets or virtual reality glasses. They serve to complete the user experience in an unprecedented way.

It is a mixture of the real world and the digital world with millimeter precision and allowing to visualize all kinds of interactive content. Even driving in off-road mode, they can project 3D topographical graphics onto the real environment. In any case, it is the user who chooses the level to be displayed. What is non-negotiable is that the Audi Activesphere Concept uses the electric platform PPEwhich is the one that production models such as the next generation of the Audi A6 will begin to use.

In this prototype it has two electric motors, one on each axis, to achieve all-wheel drive. They are combined to achieve a joint power of 442 hp and 720 Nm of torque. The battery has 100 kWh, which would allow it to travel up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. Thanks to the 800 volt technology it can be charged in direct current at speeds of up to 270 kW. In this way, with 10 minutes, 300 kilometers of autonomy are achieved and it goes from 5 to 80% in around 25 minutes.
