More than a decade has passed since the disappearance of Saab. The truth is that this fact does not fall into oblivion, since the Swedish firm has always had a special aura and is still very much loved by the public. In fact, it is not unusual to see some of his cars still on the roads, not to mention gems like certain well-preserved classics. The fact is that despite not selling vehicles, Saab still has dealerships in Taiwan and we are going to explain the reason for this singular fact.
Although it was a truly innovative brand and set a trend a few decades ago, the logical thing would have been that after its bankruptcy in 2011 all Saab facilities would have been closed. Nevertheless, Scandanavia Asia Corporation (SAC), which has been the company in charge of marketing Saab on the Asian continent since 1980, has wanted to extend its life. Currently there are no less than six official dealers of Saab in Taiwan, in addition to twelve other workshops authorized to offer an exemplary after-sales service.
What is most surprising is not the number itself, but that the newest one was opened last year 2021. It is clear that they do not sell new cars, since they are no longer manufactured, so engaged in the second hand market and the maintenance of these vehicles. It is an unheard-of event and has only been carried out thanks to the persistence of SAC, since they don’t get any kind of help of General Motors and neither of NEVS, current owners of the brand. “Servicing is our responsibility because all Saab cars in Taiwan were sold by SAC,” said its president.
For the car spare parts they do turn to GM, which still has some parts available. There are also other providers like AC Delco and Orio that feed independent retailers. Even SAC seems to have remanufactured its own parts to keep customers’ cars running. In any case, a unique situation for a defunct Swedish brand that has found its oasis in an Asian region. An anecdote worth telling while it still seems unlikely that Saab will be resurrected by NEVS.
