On Sunday, July 23, the general elections are held and the four major parties have the mobility of the Spanish in mind, but what does each one propose for the next four years? Here we review it.
This weekend is celebrated elections to the presidency of the Government of Spain and after the different television debates that have taken place, there are issues that have not been dealt with in depth, such as mobility. And it is necessary to remember that in the near horizon, specifically in 2035, the sale of combustion cars will be prohibited except those that do not use synthetic fuels. Despite this absence, this does not mean that the four major parties do not have a space for mobility in their electoral proposals, whatever the type.
And in recent weeks, what has been around without a doubt is the issue related to the payment for the use of the highways, which Brussels has already been in charge of ratifying. That said, let’s see what are the main proposals focused on mobility proposed by both PSOE, PP, Sumar and Vox.
PSOE: public transport, electric bikes and more taxes
The current ruling party in Spain has been focusing on boosting the industry for some time, mainly within the framework of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) integrated into the commitments of the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law. In this sense, they want to promote the use of public transport with a free pass up to 24 years of age or by expanding the local rail network.
In the field of personal mobility, they propose laws for the acquisition of electric bicycles that will be complemented with new lanes for this vehicle or support with more incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles. In this sense, they remain in the same line of Brussels to ban combustion cars with emissions from 2035 and welcome increase the tax on hydrocarbons, including diesel.
PP: industry support
The main opposition party agrees with a mobility shift towards electrification but advocates a progressive transformation in which more taxes are not levied to the citizen In this sense, its main focus is on rejuvenating the Spanish car fleet, which is an average of 14 years old. A measure that will accompany others to support the industry. Regarding the electric vehicle, they want expand the public charging network, as well as implement 5G technology on expressways. Lastly, they want to promote a Spain 2030 automotive plan and the Spanish 2030 circular economy strategy, improving the coordination of state and regional legislation.

Add: diesel tax and limit the private car
Yolanda Díaz’s formation is also in favor of raise taxes on diesel and it remains in the same line as the PSOE in relation to the regulations imposed from Europe. To do this, its main objective is to convert our country in a benchmark of electromobility not only in terms of vehicles, but throughout the value and production chain, with the improvement in the industry and the adaptation of current factories. It is also moving favorably in the adoption and construction of gigafactory batteries. They also want to facilitate access to electric vehicles by simplifying purchase aid and introducing progressive income criteria and promoting a network of recharging points with social and territorial criteria.
If we stick to personal mobility, Sumar wants reduce private car use for everything related to leisure, culture or sports, for which it intends to finance public transport, implement a single ticket for all and convert it into one with low emissions. In addition, they will promote the electrification of freight transport with the installation of ultra-fast chargers on the country’s main routes.
Vox: no ban on cars and support for employment in the industry
In the case of the formation of Santiago Abascal, it is the one that circulates, never better said, against the rest of formations. From Vox they see as one aberration The Ban Of Combustion Cars, as well as the mandatory implementation of the electric car for a population that cannot afford this type of mobility at an economic level. However, they do see an electric future but one that coexists with other mobility alternatives that are accessible to the humblest classes. That’s why they want fight against the norm imposed from Brussels and try to prevent there being no combustion cars by 2035.
