ferrari started the 2022 season with the fastest single-seater in the Formula 1. However, with the passage of the great prizes, they stagnated to the point that in the second half of the season they were widely surpassed by Red Bull and matched (and even advanced) by Mercedes. And now, the Italians have revealed the reason.
Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team boss has acknowledged that they focused their efforts on 2023 too soon: “We know that we stopped the development of our car too soon. and we are focused on 2023″. Thus, the Italian brand has justified the drop in performance of the single-seater in the second part of the championship.
“In a way, I’m not too worried about the rate of development because I know when we stop developing the car“, explained Binotto in statements to ‘GMM’. Thus, he sends a reassuring message to the Scudería fans, admitting that they have fallen so much but they know why and they trust that in 2023 they will be back on top.
However, efforts must be made in the remaining two races this season. Although it seems difficult, Mercedes has options to take second position in the Constructors’ World Championship from the Italians, although it is not something that worries the Ferrari team manager: “Mercedes has developed the car more while we were stopped, so I’m not too worried about that. Surely there was more potential to extract, but there was no financial availability with the budget limit to do it”.
Carlos Sainz supports this decision
Despite drastically declining results, Carlos Sainz is in favor of the decision made by Ferrari. Next year, despite not having a change in regulations like this year, if there are modifications focused mainly on the floor of the cars to avoid ‘porpoising’.
“2023 will be a new year and a new car, with new rules for the ground. It is a new opportunity for us. I think we will draw conclusions from the results of this season and the team will make a great car“, mentioned the Spaniard.
