The last time a teammate defeated lewis hamilton It was in 2016, when Nico Rosberg he surpassed him by being world champion and leaving immediately after Formula 1. It happened again in 2022 with George Russellsomething that according to him “nobody remembers”
The young British driver claimed vindication in statements to ‘Auto Motor und Sport’: “For me, the victory in Brazil was more important than the points classification”.
“At the end of the day, nobody remembers that I beat Lewis on points, I only finished fourth, In crops of nobodysays Russell.
Mercedes’ performance was very poor in 2022, far from fighting for the World Cup against Red Bull from Max Verstappen. And that affected Russell: “If someone had offered me a win, a Pole position and eight podiums a year ago, I would have said: ‘no thanks’.”
In this next championship that starts in March with the Bahrain Grand Prix, Mercedes wants to go back to being what it was: a champion team. For that they have worked throughout the preseason in winter.
They won’t have it easy because Red Bull He is a favorite again and because Ferrari is expected there. But one victory in a whole year is too poor for silver arrows.
