“It was a bit disappointing for everyone”

Fernando Alonso returned to the Formula 1 in 2021 with the hope that things would even out thanks to the new regulation. However, this was delayed a year due to the pandemic and the year of his return served the Asturian to adapt to the new cars, after two years of absence. But he has not given the expected result.

“The new rules were one of the reasons I came back. They were originally supposed to come out in 2021. So I was there a year early. And yeah, it was a little disappointing for everyone to realize that things haven’t changed drastically“, Explain alonso in ‘Auto Motor and Sport’.

Although it was expected that there would be more equality, this has not been the case. There still being three leading teams (Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes) and the rest are far away. That is why the Asturian criticizes the new Formula 1.

At most there are two teams that can win races, as has been the case in recent years. Y the gap between the two or three best teams and the center it’s still too big. In 50 percent of the races we are one lap from the winner. Therefore, we have not yet achieved the result that the Formula 1 with the restart of the rules,” he says.

Nor does he think that the budget ceiling represents a big change for the teams: “I don’t think the budget cap will have much of an impact.. Rather the rules. They are very restrictive. There is not much left to invent. The best teams are pretty close to the limit and the others will catch up.”

Finally, he shows his surprise with the behavior of the new single-seaters: “They are a bit surprising. The cars are very slow in the slow corners. Due to the high weight, they now always feel like they have 100 liters of fuel on board. Come alive in fast corners. And the higher the speed, the more grip there is. That was the case before to a certain extent, but the effect of suction versus speed is much higher with these cars.”
