The agreement with García Márquez’s family for the adaptation of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ was announced at the beginning of 2019 and nothing had been known since. Now, three and a half years later, Netflix has announced that the work is underway and has accompanied the news with a video in which you can see the process of creating the universe of Macondo through models, drawings and fabrics. “You don’t tell a story when you have to, but when you can”, says a voice over while a typewriter is seen with a sheet of paper bearing the title ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’. And the voiceover continues with one of the first sentences of the novel: “The world was so recent that many things lacked names and to mention them you had to point your finger at them.”
The information about the new series is signed by the platform’s vice president of Latin American Content, Francisco Ramos, and confirms who the professionals embarked on the project are without giving any information on deadlines or approximate release date for the time being. “With great pride, ambition and a sense of commitment and responsibility, we are pleased to announce our plans,” says Ramos. “Our commitment to this project requires the participation of the best audiovisual artists, screenwriters, producers, directors, artistic designers and costume designers, among many others, as well as the great experts in the work, most of them Colombians.”
Alex Garcia Lopez (‘The Witcher’, ‘Utopia’) and Laura Mora (‘The heist of the century’) are going to be the directors of the first season, while the production design is in charge of the Oscar winner Eugene Knight (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’) and he also works with him Barbara Enriquez (‘ROME’). At the forefront of costume design is catherine rodriguez (‘Goal against’). The arduous task of adapting the novel to the screen is the screenwriter of ‘Diaries of a motorcycle’ or ‘The 33: a story of hope’, Joseph Rivera, which collaborates with a team of Colombian screenwriters: Natalia Santa (‘Theft of the Century’), Camila Brugés (‘Green Frontier’) and Albatros González (‘Lynch’). In addition, María Camila Arias (‘The kings of the world’) will act as an advisor. Paul Perez (‘Frontera verde’) will be the director of photography and Yolanda Serrano and Eva Leira (‘Pain and glory’, ‘The paper house’) will be in charge of choosing the cast to give life to the Buendía family and the rest of the characters.
The Colombian production company Dynamo, from which series such as ‘Narcos’, ‘Frontera Verde’ or ‘The Robbery of the Century’, among other titles, have come out, embarks on this adventure with Netflix.
