The surprise at the Spanish Grand Prix was undoubtedly Mercedes. For the first time in the season its two pilots, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, on the podium. Accompanying a max verstappen whom no one can reach. They believe that in the Red Bull team, where there is not much concern about their improvements.
Christian Hornerhead of Red Bull, has shown himself to be very calm in statements collected by ‘Motorsport’: “Mercedes is still 23 seconds behind behind us at the end of the race…”.
“The truth is that yes they have made a good leap in quality, but we still have some advantage in that front area. Also, they just introduced a big improvement and we have new parts that will arrive later in the season,” says the head of the energy drink team.
About Checo Perezwho finished fourth, believes that the key to failing to catch up with the Mercedes was his start: “Sergio lost some ground in the first few laps, he didn’t have the best start. George won the game on the first lap by going off track and he has not been penalized for it”.
“I think that has made the difference. Sergio has gone further as the race has progressed and his last long run has been very strong. He hasn’t had enough laps to fight for the podium”, Horner completed.
Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship with five victories in seven races (170 points). Second, far away, is his teammate. In the constructors’ world championship, the dominance is even greater: 287 points from Red Bull to 152 from Mercedes, second.
