Arval has denounced that the Spanish car park is getting older: 70 percent more than 15 years ago.
Month by month, sales of new cars in Spain offer us figures that are not very encouraging for the automotive sector. And this, apart from affecting manufacturers, has a harmful effect on drivers: the Spanish car park is old and this trend has become more acute in recent years.
This is confirmed by the data provided by Arval, citing figures from ANFAC (Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers), in which it shows that in the last 15 years, the average age of Spanish vehicles has gone from 8.3 years in 2008 to 14 years in 2023, which represents a 70 percent increase in the age of the park in the last fifteen years and a new record.
A trend that has worsened in recent years
Arval, a company specializing in full-service vehicle leasing and new mobility solutions, maintains that this increasing aging of the cars we drive must be attributed to the New car price hike and the long delivery times and the shortage of pre-owned vehicles.
The mobility company points out that having one of the oldest fleets in Europe negatively affects sustainability and is more harmful to the environment and, furthermore, increases the accident rate.

According to data from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), in 2022 accidents involving passenger cars grew by 10 percent compared to 2019, the last year with mobility figures similar to those of last year. In 2021, the average age of passenger cars involved in fatal accidents was 13 years, according to this public body.
Arval defends the renewing function of renting to avoid further aging of the park. Thus, in 2022, leasing accounted for 26.66 percent of total registrations, with a significant weight of vehicles powered by alternative energies and with a zero label.
