Accessing the low emission zones in Madrid in a prohibited manner has meant almost 82 million revenues in fines for the City Council.

Low emission zones (ZBE) in large cities were born with the objective of banishing the most polluting cars from the center. However, the municipal coffers have benefited thanks to these policies.

An example of this is the Madrid City Council, which has communicated that it will close 2022 with revenue worth almost 82 million euros thanks to the fines received by cars that are prohibited from accessing these restricted areas, which represents 42 percent of the collection for traffic penalties.

The fine amounts to 200 euros

Let us remember that in the capital of Spain, and in all the cities that have low emission zones, the fine for entering these restricted areas amounts to 200 euros. At this time, something that will change by 2023, there are two types of restricted access zones: the ZBE (Low Emission Zones) that affects Madrid Centro and the ZBEDEP (Special Protection Low Emission Zones), which include the Plaza elliptical

In both cases, those Vehicles with the ECO or Zero environmental label can access without restrictions; vehicles labeled B and C may only drive through or park in a public or private car park; and those without a sticker (known as A) cannot circulate through the central almond, unless they are domiciled.

This will finally be the new Madrid Mobility Ordinance (and its restrictions)

Thus, the Madrid consistory has declared that it has received 81.9 million in fines, of which it has already the more than 1.5 million euros of the appealed fines have been deducted and annulled by Justice.

Regarding the points that collect the most, the first place is the access to Plaza Elíptica from the A-42, with 26 million euros in fines. In Madrid Centro it is the accesses of Alcalá, 51 (6 million euros), Gran Vía, 71 (5 million euros), and Atocha, 125 (4 million euros) that collect the most sanctions.
