Eleven years have passed since Fernando Alonso could fight for a Formula 1 world championship. He did it with Ferrari… and was left without a championship in the last race against Red Bull in Sebastian Vettel. Those numbers are being repeated by the Asturian now with Aston Martin.
Because Alonso is the driver with the second best average position in the races: close to third place, 3.38. Unattainable, of course, it is max verstappen: 1.25.
In that year 2012 in which Alonso fought with the red jumpsuit, he finished with an average position of 3.28. And then, you know, he was very close to becoming champion of the Grand Circus again.
This season that possibility seems remote. Verstappen is too strong. And although Aston Martin has closed the gap on Red Bull (to only nine seconds in the Canadian GP), the difference is important after eight races.
The World Cup is complicated, but not victory 33. The great obsession of the Asturian. “Everything is fine. I can’t think of any other time in my career where I’ve been so confident with the team,” he said after the Montreal test.
“There is more to come, I really want to win a race. I thought it might be possible if Max made a mistake. The car is going in the right direction, there will still be opportunities…” he added.
The average standings table
Verstappen and Alonso lead that average classification. Third is lewis hamilton (4,13). In fourth position it is surprising to see a Checo Perez who, however, is second in the drivers’ championship. His average position is 4.13. The other Spaniard on the grill, Carlos Sainzis sixth with an average position of 6.25.
