In Sweden they have been alerted for some time by the continuous theft of radars that occur, a fact denounced by the transport administration of the Scandinavian country. And, according to what the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense tells in a documentary, his fate seems to have been the Russian army. And it is that when dismantling a Russian drone that fell on Ukrainian territory, the Canon brand cameras that use the Swedish cinemometers have appeared.
As we read in the New York Times, more than 160 cameras have disappeared on rural roads, most between midnight and 3 in the morning. And while the Swedish government has been careful to single out Russia… who would want so many cameras? Because it is not about vandalism, but they open the device and, after separating the radar sensor, the flash and the image processing hardware… they only take the DSLR camera. The repair comes out for about 22,000 euros per unit.
It was the Swedish media Aftonbladet who uncovered that they are the same cameras used in low-tech Russian drones used in surveillance and attacks against Ukraine. Take a look at this unboxing of one of the captured Russian drones (in Ukrainian, with English subtitles):
It is not the only theory. And it is that Eva Lundberg, coordinator of the traffic camera system at the Swedish Transport Administration, assured the Times that the stolen cameras are actually Nikon DSLRs and that, in addition, they focus at a specific distance and “it is not possible to adjust them” , according to the provider of traffic cameras.
Videos like the one shown, with Canon DSLRs have a focus mode set to manual (resin-fixed) and with the ring focusing at infinity (farthest distance). Not exactly the same as radar, but very similar.
If they don’t go to Russia… where do so many Swedish radar cameras end up? And how do those Canon cameras get into the Russian army? And it is that the Japanese company officially stopped the sale and delivery of its products to Russia in March 2022.
