This is the new BMW 3.0 CSL 2023

As we had anticipated, BMW finally presented the 3.0 CSLa 50-unit limited production model based on the M4 featuring completely redesigned bodywork Inspired by the original model from the 70s, which at the time earned the nickname of the Batmobile and which we had the great fortune to drive.

Why only 50 units? Because this model celebrates the 50th anniversary of BMW M. Although based on the M4, the 3.0 CSL is lighter and comes equipped with the most powerful six-cylinder engine in BMW history delivering 553 hp and mated to a manual gearbox.

The yellow-tinted headlights and laser taillights are the same as those on the M4 CSL, but in the case of the 3.0 CSL they are partially covered by the features bulging fenders. Luckily, this time the voluminous (and controversial) grill that BMW placed in the new M3/M4 is not presentsince in the 3.0 CSL it has been replaced by more elegant and harmonious kidneys.

As with the original model, the most striking design feature is the large rear wing and additional roof-mounted spoiler. Also featured is the beautiful Alpine White BMW M graphics racing graphic, which the brand says requires a special paint process that adds an additional 6,700 hours of manual labor in production.

Finally, contrasting gold-finish alloy wheels measure 20-inches at the front and 21-inches at the rear, shod with bespoke Michelin rubber.

Inside doors we notice a cabin replete with black Alcantara leather upholstery and carbon fiber accents with a matte finish. The rear seats are gone and have been replaced by a storage compartment with dedicated space for two helmets.

To save weight, BMW reduced the sound insulation, although it maintains the digital cockpit. Another special touch is the retro style manual gearbox lever and in white.

BMW 3.0 CSL, Mechanics

Under the hood of the 3.0 CSL we have the most powerful version of BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, producing 553 hp and 405.6 lb-ft of torque. This represents an increase of 9 hp compared to the M4 CSL, but a significant drop in torque (about 73 lb-ft) due to the limitations of the manual sixth gearbox, which sends power only to the rear axle. Yes, we are reaching a time where purism takes its toll.

Secondly, the chassis has also been fitted with M Adaptive Suspension and standard M carbon ceramic brakes.

BMW did not provide performance figures at this time.Although the 3.0 CSL is expected to be faster than the regular M4 but perhaps a bit slower than the M4 CSL due to the manual gearbox and the aforementioned drop in torque.

BMW will take three months to complete production of the 50 units of the 3.0 CSL. This future collection classic does not currently have an official priceAlthough we assume that it will be the most expensive in the BMW portfolio.
