With more than 10.4 million cars sold, Toyota repeats in 2022 as the manufacturer that sells the most worldwide.
Toyota has become, for the third consecutive year, the brand that has sold the most cars worldwide in 2022, accumulating 10,483,024 vehicles delivered last year.
This figure adds the sales of Toyota and Lexus models (9,566,961 units), Daihatsu (766,091 units) and 149,972 Hino trucks. It is a slight reduction (0.1 percent) from 2021 levels and Toyota’s first year-on-year decline in two years. And this despite the supply crisis that has plagued the car industry in recent months.

Although sales of the Toyota brand in the Japanese market fell significantly (12.7 percent to a total of 1.28 million registered units) for the third consecutive year, a 1.7 percent improvement in overseas sales (8,277,829 units sold) limited the global fall to 0.5 percent.
As a curious fact, it should be noted that Toyota sold more electric cars in December 2022 than in all of 2020: 5,897 compared to 3,346, thanks to the launch of the bZ4X SUV, the first 100×100 electric vehicle for the company’s mass market. At the same time sales of the hydrogen-fuelled Toyota Mirai fell by a third, to 3,924 units. The drop was especially pronounced in Japan, where only 848 examples were sold last year, 65.3 percent less than in 2021.

In this way, Toyota continues to maintain the throne of the world’s leading automobile manufacturer, ahead of the Volkswagen Group, which sold 8.3 million cars7 percent less than the previous year.
This has been VW’s worst result in over a decade, caused by the shortage of supplies generated by the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. In addition, the closures and restrictions caused by the coronavirus in China also took their toll on sales, since the most populous country in the world is one of the main markets of the German group.
