Fernando Alonso He is a true strategist. During the race in Australia, he again gave a ‘masterclass’ on the radio, asking his team what the race situation was, where he was Carlos Sainz and asking for caution when they asked him to squeeze Lewis Hamilton.
The Spaniard was behind and could not get within a second to enter the DRS zone. This was the message from the box: “We think it’s worth trying to push to get past him”. And Alonso replied with “I’m pressing”, agreeing with his team that he could attack him.
But a few laps later he stopped seeing it clearly: “Difficult to get close. The race is long. We have a Mercedes and a Ferrari outside. I want to be protectedwe have a lot of laps left on these wheels.”
Another of the most outstanding radio stations of the weekend was when he saw Carlos Sainz just behind him. “Where has Sainz passed Gasly?”he asked his engineer, who informed him of how the overtaking had been.
Crossing the finish line, he worried about the points they had scored in the constructors’ championship: “How many points have Ferrari and Mercedes achieved?”. And he concluded with a congratulatory message for Aston Martin: “Congratulations, guys. Good result for the team.”
The green team remains second in the championship with a nine point difference over Mercedes. In the drivers’ championship, Alonso is third behind max verstappen (69 points) and Checo Perez (54).
