There is a legal loophole that allows some cars to travel up to 150 km/h on Spanish roads.
Many motorists complain about speed limits. They argue that the cars have improved enough that those limits have become obsolete. However, the trend on the part of the authorities is the opposite: to lower the limits in pursuit of road safety and the decrease in the accident rate.
As you well know (and if not, we have a problem), depending on the road on which you drive your car, the limits are different, starting from 30 km/h in the city, going through 90 km/h on conventional roads. and arriving up to 120 km/h on highways and motorways.

120 km/h sign.
Thus, 120 km/h is the maximum speed at which you can go in Spain with your vehicle, although there is a caveat that enables you to drive up to 30 km/h above that limit without being fined by the authorities.
This exception is found in article 47 of the General Vehicle Regulations (Royal Decree 2822/1998, of December 23), where it is stated that “exceptionally carry out tests on highways, dual carriageways and other public roads national territory, for which it is necessary to exceed the generic speed limits established for this type of road”
And it adds that “in such cases, the body competent to grant the permit will establish in it the maximum speed to be developed, which, unless the road has been closed to general traffic, may not exceed 30 kilometers per hour over that normally authorized for the road and vehicle in question”.

Finally, the legal text indicates that this authorization “may be granted to vehicle manufacturers or their legal representatives, bodybuilders and official laboratorieswho are holders of temporary company permits, authorizations to carry out extraordinary tests or research trials with a certain vehicle ”.
To differentiate themselves, these vehicles that exceed the speed limits must have something that identifies them. Thus, according to the law, “in addition to the registration plates and permits provided for in article 44, two plates with the letters FVin accordance with the provisions of annex XI of this Regulation”.
