Volkswagen has confirmed that there will not be an electric Beetle nor will the Scirocco return, putting an end to the designs that pull from nostalgia.
The nostalgiathrough designs based on popular models of the past, has been a strategy that some brands have followed of cars. Volkswagen has been one of them and we have the latest example with the ID. Buzz, with clear reminiscences of the T1 van.
This has caused fans to think that the German brand was going to continue down that path with other models in the range, such as the popular Beetle/Beetle. We have bad news: it’s not going to be like that.

Or at least that is what the CEO of the Volkswagen brand, Thomas Schäfer, has declared in an interview with Autocar. Asked about the possibility of the Beetle returning to dealerships in the form of an electric vehicle, Schäfer has been quite categorical: “I don’t think so, because there are certain vehicles that have already had their moment«, He explained to the Autocar colleagues. “There would be no point in bringing him back.”

Moving forward in the interview, Schäfer is not so blunt, although the message seems clear. “I wouldn’t say it with 100 percent certainty,” Schäfer added about the future of the Beetle. “But from my point of view, I wouldn’t consider it. It’s the same as the Scirocco: it had its moment, then there was a new model based on a reinterpretation. Do that again? I don’t think so. And looking to the future, with the balance between all these technologies and the associated cost, You have to invest the money in the best possible place”.

With these statements, an end to the traditional rumors about the return of the Beetle in the form of an electric car, fueled by Volkswagen itself. You have to remember that the former CEO of the Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess, seemed open to the idea noting that “many other emotional cars, besides the ID. Buzz, are possible on our scalable MEB platform.”
Finally, Schäfer has recalled that the company will not eliminate its most emblematic denominations. “We have decided that we are not going to get rid of the traditional successful names that have been with us for so long and in which we have invested, such as Golf and Tiguan“.
